About Monte Rio
The small town of Monte Rio, California is peaceful and pristine, boasting a long history as a vacation destination. This Sonoma County town of about 1,100 residents long-ago gained its popularity as a stop on the railway that ran to neighboring Marin County. What began with one hotel and restaurant blossomed into a favorite getaway by the 1920s.
Today, Monte Rio (originally Montrio) is a mix of vacation resort and quiet residential community, catering to those who work in San Francisco but prefer rural bliss to big city life.
The climate here is pleasant year-round and because the town is inland, it's subject to less fog than its nearby coastal neighbors. Visitors flock to the banks of the Russian River to participate in a number of watersports, much as guests did in the 1920s. Canoeing and kayaking, fishing, and hiking are all quite popular in this Russian River Valley town. For some outdoor fun, head to the Riverfront Meadow at Rocky Beach, overseen by the Monte Rio Recreation and Park District, a non-profit group concerned with preserving the Russian River Valley's natural resources.
Monte Rio activities include a number of annual events such as the Memorial Day Barbecue, popular with the entire town; the Water Carnival Weekend and Big Rocky Game; a gala 4th of July Fireworks display; Pegasus Theater Presents, and a number of smaller community fundraising activities.
Monte Rio lodging includes several small resorts, inns, and cottages as well as vacation rental homes. Monte Rio restaurants aren't plentiful so most vacationers travel to other nearby towns to grab a bite to eat.
