About Bodega Bay

The charming coastal village of Bodega Bay is a picturesque seaside escape that is home to many of Sonoma County's fishermen. These are working-class fishermen - not the sport variety, but rather the ones who make their living from the sea.

This little Sonoma Coast town is located along scenic Highway 1, near the Point Reyes Peninsula. The area is a favorite with weekend visitors who want to relax near the waters of the Pacific. During the summer, this little town of about 1,500 swells with the sights and sounds of the season.

It's no wonder that Bodega Bay is so popular with both locals and tourists. The town is pristine and quite charming and Bodega Bay activities are plentiful.

Though the water up north tends to be a bit chilly, Bodega Bay's beaches are almost always crowded on warm, sunny weekends. Salmon Beach, just north of town, is the favorite family spot and its calm waters are perfect for little ones who like to splash. Skimboarding is popular here, too.

Steep interior cliffs form the backdrop for Portuguese Beach, a good location for wading or just strolling in the moonlight. Goat Rock, however, is the first choice for kayakers hoping to explore the waters of Northern California. All these beaches are part of the Sonoma Coast State Park, one of the most picturesque areas in all of Sonoma County

Doran Regional Park also boasts about 2 miles of beach and is the ideal location for a picnic or playing in the sand. You can enjoy fishing or crabbing here as well. In contrast, Westside Regional Park offers a boat launch ramp, picnic areas, and individual campsites. From January through April, Bodega Head State Park is the perfect whale-watching spot.

Though the water is a prime attraction here, there are plenty of Bodega Bay activities you can enjoy without getting wet. Make a stop at the Sonoma Coast Visitor Center and pick up some maps and info on Bodega Bay's many fun attractions suitable for the whole family.

You might want to head for Bodega Bay's many art galleries and shops to do a little browsing…and buying. As is true throughout much of Sonoma County, Bodega Bay is fond of the visual arts and boasts many fine local artists.

Hikers should check out Pinnacle Gulch Trail, a 1-mile out-and-back trail that leads to a quiet, pristine beach known mostly to locals. Bring along a picnic lunch and watch the harbor seals and sea lions. The Bird Walk Coastal Access trail provides a look at thousands of birds all year long and it's handicapped accessible for disabled visitors.

If you decide to enjoy a meal here, you'll find a handful of small eateries. Bodega Bay restaurants are quite diverse for a little town and range from bars where locals hang out to fine restaurants.

Bodega Bay lodging presents a myriad of opportunities from camping in the regional parks to charming inns and lodges to vacation rental homes. Most overlook the beautiful rugged Pacific coastline.
