About Rio Nido
Rio Nido is a quaint unincorporated town nestled in a redwood canyon along the Rio Nido Creek in Sonoma County’s Russian River Valley. The small community increases in size every summer when vacationers descend on the quiet hamlet. There are a number of summer homes and cabins available for rent, as well as a small resort hotel to accommodate the guests.
Rio Nido experienced its heyday during 1940s through the 1960s. During this time summer revelers made Rio Nido Beach quite a happening place. A loudspeaker played music from Santa Rosa’s KSRO radio station, while crowds enjoyed treats from the snack bar and rented canoes. During the evenings, a small orchestra gave free concerts and hosted dances in the town square.
Even though Rio Nido’s glory days are over, it is still a fun place to visit. There is still plenty of water activities available on the river – canoeing, swimming, kayaking and fishing being the most popular. Nearby Armstrong Woods State Park provides excellent biking, hiking and horseback riding trails, as well as quality campgrounds. Wine lovers will appreciate the abundance of world class wineries of the Russian River Valley.
