About Petaluma

Petaluma is a lively city with a rich history, a strong personality and a wide range of activities and attractions for visitors of all interests. There is something for everyone in Petaluma. The city first attracted pioneers during the Gold Rush when its fertile farmlands supplied San Francisco with all of its produce. It then became the site of a major chicken processing industry. The entire town became devoted to poultry and even had the only known poultry drugstore while suffering the indignity of nicknames like “Chickaluma.” Today the town is known more for its beautiful historic Victorian buildings and vibrant culture, but it is also still proudly a Sonoma County agricultural center.

Visitors to Petaluma are usually drawn by its natural and man-made beauty, as well as its popularity as a movie location. Just walking around the city’s historic downtown area is a lovely way to enjoy a beautiful day, but history buffs might also want to join the walking tour or head to the Petaluma Historical Museum. Outdoor enthusiasts can explore one of the area’s parks, go golfing, bicycling or kayaking on the Petaluma River. Everyone will enjoy the seemingly constant stream of events held by the city.
