About Monte Rio
Monte Rio is a census-designated place (CDP) located along the Russian River in Sonoma County near Guerneville and Jenner. Its mild weather all year round, sunny skies and beautiful surroundings that include the Russian River made it a popular summer destination in the 1920s. Today Monte Rio still attracts quite a few visitors looking to escape the hustle and bustle of San Francisco and enjoy the peaceful environs of the small town.
Because the Russian River is so close to town, summer activities usually revolve around the sparkling blue ribbon of water. Visitors can head to the Riverfront Meadow at Rocky Beach for some sunbathing and swimming. There are also opportunities for kayaking, canoeing and fishing. For the landlubbers, hiking in the area is quiet enjoyable as well.
Monte Rio also has quite a few events considering its small size. The most popular annual event is the Memorial Day Barbeque, but other fun festivities include the Water Carnival Weekend and Big Rocky Game, 4th of July Fireworks and Pegasus Theater Presents. The town is also home of the controversial Bohemian Grove, an exclusive all-male club with members that include prominent government officials, business leaders and artists.

Monte Rio California Information
The small town of Monte Rio, California is peaceful and pristine, boasting a long history as a vacation destination. This Sonoma County town of about 1,100 residents long-ago gained its popularity as a stop on the railway that ran to neighboring Marin County. What began with one hotel and restaurant blossomed into a favorite getaway by the 1920s.
Today, Monte Rio (originally Montrio) is a mix of vacation resort and quiet residential community, catering to those who work in San Francisco but prefer rural bliss to big city life.
The climate here is pleasant year-round and because the town is inland, it's subject to less fog than its nearby coastal neighbors. Visitors flock to the banks of the Russian River to participate in a number of watersports, much as guests did in the 1920s. Canoeing and kayaking, fishing, and hiking are all quite popular in this Russian River Valley town. For some outdoor fun, head to the Riverfront Meadow at Rocky Beach, overseen by the Monte Rio Recreation and Park District, a non-profit group concerned with preserving the Russian River Valley's natural resources.
Monte Rio activities include a number of annual events such as the Memorial Day Barbecue, popular with the entire town; the Water Carnival Weekend and Big Rocky Game; a gala 4th of July Fireworks display; Pegasus Theater Presents, and a number of smaller community fundraising activities.
Monte Rio lodging includes several small resorts, inns, and cottages as well as vacation rental homes. Monte Rio restaurants aren't plentiful so most vacationers travel to other nearby towns to grab a bite to eat.
