About Lakeville

Lakeville is a tiny unincorporated community located on Highway 121 in Sonoma County four miles southeast of Petaluma. It is situated near the Petaluma River and the Tolay Lake, from which it gets its name. The historical lake has experienced quite a few alterations at the hands of Lakeville area residents. The first was in 1850 when settlers dynamited its natural dam and drained it so that they could grow crops and graze their animals. After this destruction, the Tolay Lake usually went dry in during summer months. More recently, an earthen causeway was built through the center of the lake, dividing it in two. Sonoma County purchased the lake from the Cardoza family in 2005 for conservation purposes. The area is now known as Tolay Lake Regional Park. Although there is no swimming allowed in the lake, visitors will find some great trails for biking, hiking and horseback riding. The grassy areas around the lake are also perfect picnic spots. Tolay Lake is home to a couple different Golden Eagles, the Western Burrowing Owl and quite a few other birds, which makes it a fun destination for birders.
