About Freestone

Freestone is a tiny unincorporated community in the Russian River Valley of Sonoma County near Occidental. What it lacks in size, it more than makes up for in character. When the North Pacific Railroad was built through the community in 1873, Freestone became one of the area’s prosperous trade centers. Many buildings were erected during this time, all very picturesque and many still intact. Two of the most notable are the 150-year-old hotel built in the Greek Revival style and the local grocery store, which was built in 1875 and has since been used as a post office and rural postal substation. Even though Freestone is only located about a 20 minute drive from Santa Rosa, it has remained largely untouched by modernity and visitors often feel as though they have traveled back in time to the 19th century.

Like the rest of the Russian River Valley towns, though, Freestone has more to offer than historic buildings. It is home to the Freestone Vineyards and Winery, which specializes in Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays. Whether heading to the Pacific Ocean or the Russian River, there are also many opportunities for water sports just a short jaunt from Freestone.
