About Eldridge


Eldridge is a tiny census-designated place located in the Sonoma Valley near Santa Rosa, Sonoma and Petaluma. It is most notably the home of the Sonoma Developmental Center. This is California’s largest state-run facility that serves the needs of persons with developmental disabilities, and has been operating out of its present location since 1891. In addition to providing an invaluable service to thousands of people, the center’s main building is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The area surrounding Eldridge is known throughout the world for its beauty and wineries. Wine tours are available in the surrounding towns, while visiting the vineyards independently is also an easy option for visitors to Eldridge. The Sonoma and Jack London State Historic parks are also quite close to the census-designated place, both of which provide excellent opportunities for enjoying the area’s redwoods and state history. San Pablo Bay is not too far away for water lovers looking for some boating or fishing opportunities. While there are no restaurants or lodging options in Eldridge, but there are plenty in the neighboring towns.

Eldridge is technically not a town, but a “census-designated place” or CDP. The CDP is home to the Sonoma Developmental Center,which is the largest facility in California that serves the needs of persons with developmental disabilities. Eldridge covers an area of 0.7 square miles. The CDP was named after James Eldridge.

Best For:

Eldridge may not have much to offer foodies, but history buffs will appreciate the Sonoma Developmental Center’s architectural and medical history. It is also a nice place to pass through for those interested in experiencing a part of the Sonoma Valley that is off of the tourist track.

Eldridge California Information

Eldridge, California - population about 1,500 - is part of the Sonoma Valley area of Sonoma County. Surrounded by wineries, redwoods, and plenty of natural beauty, Eldridge provides easy access to state parks, bodies of water like the San Pablo Bay, and larger cities such as Santa Rosa, Sonoma, and Petaluma.

Eldridge lodging includes camping in area parks and plenty of small inns, B&Bs, and motels in neighboring towns. You won't find any Eldridge restaurants either but there are many choices within a short driving distance of the town.

State Historic Parks such as Sonoma and Jack London provide a look at some historic California sites as well as the opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors. Wineries are plentiful in the towns around Eldridge and a short jaunt will take you to a variety of vineyards in both Sonoma County and the Napa Valley.
