About Camp Meeker
Camp Meeker was originally established around 1886 by a lumber baron named Melvin Cyrus Meeker. It was a huge logging town that supplied the materials for building San Francisco and then rebuilding it after the 1906 earthquake. Once all of the trees were logged, Camp Meeker became a quaint village that was a favorite spot for vacationing San Franciscans. During its heyday, families would pack up the kids and live in the cool reforested hills – putting on talent shows, going to dances and hanging out at “the shack.”
Even if it isn’t as popular a vacation spot as it once, Camp Meeker is still home to the St Dorothy’s Rest, a retreat and summer camp. There are also about 350 homes nestled in the village’s woods. Ranging in size and luxuriousness, they are generally situated on steep hills stretching above Camp Meeker’s tiny one way streets or on sunny, flat plots of land. It is still a relaxing place to spend the summer where visitors can enjoy their solitude, but hop on over to nearby Occidental for a night out on the town.
Camp Meeker Facts
Camp Meeker, once a logging camp, is a favorite summer retreat for city dwellers. Private homes in the woods provide lots of peach and quiet and the nearby Russian River allows for some fun water-based activities.
Camp Meeker was home to the Camp Meeker Players, who performed shows on the outdoor stage and barn. Before the Camp Meeker Players, San Franciscans spending the summer in the village would often put on talent shows on Saturday nights at the stage and go to the barn for dances that always ended with the song Good Night Ladies.
